What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

The renewable energy industry is going through a challenging time in Chile. The most important matter has been implementing a loss mitigation strategy, which has involved a 360° vision; from negotiating with clients, suppliers, and creditors; talking with different authorities to explain the complex scenario and urgent needs; constant report to our shareholders; monitoring compliance and applying preventive measures; incorporating technology into the legal department; and keeping the team’s spirit high.

Why are in-house lawyers well-placed to drive change in their organisations?

Lawyers not only have a better understanding of the risks involved in decision-making, but we also know better how to implement a particular objective by having a good sense of the resources, effort needed, and time involved. Many times, employees come to me with creative ideas and as we talk, we produce a plan and bring it down to reality. Also, as the legal department interacts with everyone in the company, we lead and coordinate well with the different teams.

As we live in a fast-paced world today, what skills will a corporate legal team need to succeed in the modern in-house industry?

The legal team nowadays needs to be in constant communication with all areas, especially the CEO, to be connected with the company’s needs and anticipate problems with good solutions. Additionally, it is important to have the skills to explain ideas in an easy manner, sometimes by using technology, such as spreadsheets or PowerPoint. Moreover, it is relevant to be good at public speaking, pushing forward your ideas, and motivating people.
