First, can you please give us an idea of the sort of work your team has done recently  

We provided legal services for the operation of the prestigious Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios, where major Hollywood productions shot during 2022 and 2023, including: Hulu’s Saint X; NBC Universal’s The Resort; MGM’s Road House; Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark? 

We provided production legal services to over 90% of international productions made in the Dominican Republic, including: NBC Universal’s The Best Man; Netflix’s Nyad; Studio Canal’s Something in the Water. 

The team rendered all legal services required to produce and finance award winning Dominican feature films, including 2023 Berlinale darling “Ramona”, “Croma Kid” and “La Hembrita” [Rotterdam]. 

These were instrumental in Lantica accruing over $200m in direct foreign investment in the Dominican Republic every year, employing over 2,000 Dominicans yearly, using more than 130,000 hotel nights every year. It was also the most effective promotion of the Dominican Republic abroad, through Hollywood movie stars posting their beautiful pictures on social media from our beaches in the Dominican Republic. These remarkable results are expected to continue growing in the medium term.  

How do you keep up to date with changes in Dominican laws and regulations relevant to your organisation’s industry? 

As the major player in the industry, we have excellent relationships with all the stakeholders in the value chain. As a result, we have open communication with regulatory and governmental agencies, above and below the line local staff, and former and prospective foreign producers interested in the Dominican Republic. We also rely on our specialised outside counsel to advise on regulatory changes that are being considered or addressed in different instances and that may affect the business model or operations.  

What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why? 

The capacity of the Dominican Republic to continue providing world-class production services into a framework of stability and rule of law is a major cause that concerns me. Over the last 20 years, the Dominican Republic has been a beacon of democracy, foreign investment, and business opportunities in Latin America, with important improvements in all relevant international indicators of development. It is required that state actors continue implementing public policy that consistently improve the quality of life of Dominicans, and institutions that respect the rule of law. Foreign investment, and hence our industry, is dependent on the Dominican Republic to continue being a friendly environment for business, investments, and new ventures.
