First, can you please give us an idea of the sort of work your team has done recently? 

My team has been actively engaged in a diverse range of legal undertakings that showcase expertise across multiple areas. Recently we have ventured in significant projects in the scope of digital transformation and data protection to optimise the experience of the brokerage firm’s clients and its expansion in the market. Collaborating closely with the Superintendencia del Mercado de Valores de la República Dominicana, we have contributed to reviewing and shaping the legal framework for digital onboarding within the capital markets, a pioneering effort that embraces the future while upholding the highest standards of security and compliance. 

Furthermore, we have been able to provide counsel on various legal domains, including corporate governance matters, general regulations, contracts, and securities, expertly navigating through complex legal scenarios to secure favourable outcomes for the brokerage firm and offering strategic and comprehensive legal counsel across diverse areas. Apart from overseeing legal and regulatory matters, I also serve as the compliance officer, ranging from ensuring strict regulatory compliance to facilitating seamless transactions within the dynamic world of capital markets. 

How do you stay up-to-date with changes in laws and regulations in the Dominican Republic relevant to your organisation’s industry? 

As a member of the legal and compliance committee of the Asociación de Puestos de Bolsa de la República Dominicana, I have had the opportunity to collaborate closely with the Superintendencia del Mercado de Valores de la República Dominicana to review and reformulate the legal and regulatory framework on diverse capital markets’ matters, such as digital onboarding, anti-money laundering and investors protection.  

Moreover, a fundamental aspect of my role revolves around ensuring that the entire brokerage firm remains current with the intricate landscape of capital markets’ regulations. I actively foster a culture of compliance and awareness, organising regular training sessions and providing relevant updates to all team members. By facilitating a comprehensive understanding of evolving regulations throughout the firm, I empower colleagues to make informed decisions. This approach not only strengthens our ability to provide service but also underscores our unwavering dedication to upholding regulatory compliance across all facets of our operations. 

Regulations in the industry are in a state of constant evolution to align with the ongoing digital transformation, which reflects the commitment of the authorities and regulators to continue to promote an efficient, transparent, and secure market environment. Hence, I am committed to remaining up to date about regulatory changes by monitoring shifts in regulations, market trends and emerging practices. 

What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?   

I am particularly keen and actively engaged in digital transformation and data protection matters. These topics serve as a crucial foundation for fostering innovation, ensuring data security, electronic transactions, and cybersecurity, whilst enabling the country’s integration into the digital economy. 

It is my belief that in the financial sector these regulations are essential for ensuring the integrity of digital financial transactions and strengthening investors’ trust. The introduction of comprehensive and innovative regulations governing digital transactions in the Dominican Republic is an indispensable step toward embracing the digital future to stimulate economic growth and innovation.
