Identified by nominators in this year’s research as ‘a team leader and excellent lawyer who is very committed to the business’, Alejandro García Granda has been the vice-president for legal and compliance and regional counsel for the Mediterranean region at Vestas Mediterranean since 2012.
He initially joined the energy company as legal director for Iberia (Spain and Portugal) in 2008, and regarding his arrival says ‘joining a [truly] international company with the headquarters out of Spain’, was a particular highlight in his career. ‘It is not a Danish company with different “Danish” headquarters spread around the globe. On the contrary, it is an actual multinational company, with global and plural regional inputs and talents’, he explains. García also recognises ‘assuming the lead of a multiregional and multicultural team with a huge geographical spread both in South Europe, Latin America and the MENA region’, as another proud moment in his professional experience.
He has ensured his legal function provides dedicated support to business units and departments instead of being a global advisory desk leading to its deeper involvement in business decisions and executions. With Vestas completing an average of three-to-four market entries per year in recent times, García has been a key figure in completing legal, regulatory, technical, tax and corporate deployments to enable Vestas to start new businesses in safe environments, which he says is ‘always exciting and challenging at the same time’.
Confirming his role as an integral part of Vestas’ success in the region, nominators duly noted that, ‘in 2017, Vestas Mediterranean reached a record in volume of sales and number of transactions successfully closed. García took an active role in those achievements. Among others, he was the legal responsible of a project in Reynosa, Mexico that involved the acquisition of the largest wind farm in Latin America’.
