Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?

I believe in innovation and one way I managed to improve a corporate procedure, in tandem with my legal team, was the design and subsequent launch of a series of strategies that derived in an efficient and paperless corporate governance process including: digital signatures in minutes, hybrid meetings, online training for board and committee members, digital authorisations and automating processes. The aforementioned strategies reduced manual data entry and enabled real-time collaboration which allowed us to make quicker decisions and faster delivery of tasks. This also eliminated the need for managing a huge volume of physical documents and considerably lowered storage expenses. Additionally, it made it easier to categorise and store information and retrieve documents which are protected with different levels of access controls. Regarding contracts, the simplification of templates, standardisation of non-negotiable clauses, and deployment of digital signatures also provided significant advantages in terms of timing, efficiency, accessibility, security and cost savings. These improvements were made using existing company resources.

Can you foresee any key developments to the way general counsel work over the next five years?

Over the next five years, various key developments are expected to transform the way general counsel work, specifically new technological solutions, artificial intelligence and the need for more robust diversity and inclusion programs. General counsel have to keep ahead of these ongoing changes and keep delivering value.

General counsel will need to leverage technology solutions to streamline legal processes, automate routine tasks, and enhance their overall efficiency. This contemplates the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for contract management, digital signatures, data analytics for legal risk assessment, and collaboration tools for remote work. Nevertheless, with the increasing amount of data being generated and shared through AI, there will be a growing need for lawyers to focus on data protection and privacy matters, including compliance with data protection laws, managing data breaches, and implementing robust privacy policies.

General counsel must work to ensure that corporate culture has policies and guidelines with practices that lead to inclusion and diversity such as blind resumés, quotas and training. General counsel should champion these causes and foster awareness of the positive impact these strategies have on the overall success of the company.

What are some of the main trends impacting the insurance sector in Mexico?

I believe that technological innovation, revamping the customer experience and the shift from payer to partner for the insurance sector are among the top trends currently impacting the field.

Technological innovation

The digital transformation is making waves in the insurance sector. Insurtech companies are emerging, offering personalised and innovative solutions such as online sales platforms, mobile apps for policy underwriting and management, and the use of data analytics for risk assessment and customer profiling.

Focus on customer experience

Insurers are increasingly realising the importance of providing a seamless and personalised experience to customers. They are leveraging technology to offer self-service options, faster claims processing, and improved customer support.

Changing the role from payer to partner

The insurance sector is adapting to a new reality of evolving health risks which result in unpayable premiums. Insurers are developing new models of primary care health services and coverage options to address these challenges.
