Can you foresee any key developments to the way general counsel work over the next five years?

The general counsel – and their team – must be closer to the business to fully understand both the way the company operates, and the way the local and regional regulations affect the industry. It is also important that the legal department have a basic understanding of finances and tech developments for it is no longer enough to know just about the law and its regulations but to have a more complete grasp of the panorama of the industry.

What are some of the main trends impacting the industry sector you work in in Mexico?

In Mexico, the insurance industry had been without major changes and/or challenges for some time however, in recent times both the regulator and the local and federal courts have shifted their point of view and are enacting new policies that are aimed for newer regulations that can incorporate new technological trends and needs.

How would you assess the impact of new technologies on the legal landscape in Mexico, and what measures would you propose to leverage these technologies while ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations?

Currently, Mexico is a country with a big paper culture in the sense that almost everything must be printed out and singed and copied and recopied and stored, however we have been implementing new systems through which we are reducing our eco impact and turning into digital. Technology is always a step ahead and the regulations can´t keep up so it is the job of the legal department to seek a balance between what exists and what can be done.

How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?

Both diversity and inclusion are a big part of our lives and they should also be a big part of both our work and companies. The environment in which we work must be an experience that is both meaningful and respectful and one in which everybody can feel safe and welcome and valued as important members of their work community. In our area, we have implemented measures to have safe spaces for everyone to feel free to be themselves and know that they are valued and respected.
