Can you tell us about your journey to become an in-house counsel? What inspired you to pursue a career in this field?

This journey has been exciting and challenging; this is not a path I had planned when I began my professional career. My first professional experience dealt with working in administrative and tax matters in a private law firm; after a few years, I received the opportunity to work at PwC Legal, where I specialised in tax and consulting services. After three years, I was fortunate enough to secure a position as an in-house counsel in a large automotive company. Being part of its decision-making process has inspired me to contribute with my legal expertise to help guide the company’s operations and ensure compliance with laws and regulations. I have always been personally interested in contributing to making changes that have a global impact. This is the case with new trends related to the electrification of vehicles, protecting the environment, collaborating to ensure diversity and inclusion, and helping to create a cleaner, safer, and more equitable world for all.

In your role as an in-house counsel, what are your primary responsibilities and tasks daily?

In-house counsel have many responsibilities and tasks that vary from day to day; during my days as in-house counselling, I have had the opportunity to participate in a wide array of different projects from different angles in which my expertise has been helpful and where I have had the chance to gain more experience and always learn something new. On a day-to-day basis, my responsibilities include reviewing and drafting contracts, participating in negotiating agreements, and analysing legal risks. Also, ensure that the company follows relevant laws and regulations. However, my roles are not limited to addressing legal issues but also taking a leading part in reviewing the company’s policies, implementing projects that will positively impact the company, and enhancing its top position in the industry.

What key challenges have you faced as a rising star in-house counsel, and how have you overcome them?

The biggest challenge in any legal position, but especially when working as an in-house counsel, is gaining my colleagues’ and internal clients’ trust and respect, especially when making meaningful and impactful legal decisions. I have always focused on building solid relationships, demonstrating my expertise through research and analysis, and, most importantly, effective communication about the impact of business decisions. One of the most rewarding challenges I have overcome was in the development of a strong support network within the legal community and internal clients, and to become a leader who can improve the personal development of my colleagues.

What steps have you taken to enhance your professional development and expand your legal skill set?

I have always tried to enhance my professional development and expand my legal skill set. Most importantly, I have continued in legal education programs, including a master’s degree in corporate law and I also attend relevant seminars and conferences. Also, I engage in self-study and personal research to deepen my knowledge in specific areas of law. I always try to lead and participate in diverse projects within the company, allowing me to gain exposure within the company. This personal journey has always been driven by my passion for the legal field and my passion for collaborating with leading companies that will impact society in the upcoming years. I have learned that, to overcome challenges, it is always important to build strong relationships, develop effective communication, and continuously invest in my professional development.
