Can you discuss your or your company’s efforts relating to renewability, sustainability, or other environmentally friendly activities?

Uber’s sustainability focus aligns with its long-term strategy to create a positive environmental impact. Uber Planet, a global initiative that began this decade, has reached millions of users worldwide. Uber Planet allows them to offset the carbon emissions generated by the trips they take through the Uber app.

In Mexico, Uber works with the prestigious Apala Group, which ensures that all projects undertaken through Uber Planet benefit Mexico directly. In 2023, Uber invested in three specific projects through Planet: reforestation in the State of Mexico, mangrove protection in Baja California Sur and electricity generation for households that do not have access to the national electrical grid.

Uber’s second positive sustainability impact comes from an alliance with Mexican company VEMO, which in 2022 incorporated its fully electric vehicles into the platform. As of 2024, Vemo has over 600 electric vehicles offering trips through Uber and that number is expected to keep on growing throughout the year.

Our overall goal is to become carbon-neutral worldwide by 2040, and in Mexico we are doing our part to ensure that this goal is met and the planet benefits from our efforts.

In all of the above-mentioned projects, we have collaborated with an exceptional team of professionals and advisors both inside and outside Uber Mexico to make them possible.

Why are in-house lawyers well-placed to drive change in their organisations?

An effective in-house lawyer goes beyond providing legal advice in isolation. In-house lawyers are well-placed to drive change in their organisations because they possess a deep understanding of the company’s internal ways of working, culture, and business goals. Their proximity to key decision-makers allows in-house lawyers to align legal strategies with the organisational goals. Additionally, in-house lawyers often have a holistic view of potential risks and opportunities, enabling them to proactively contribute to strategic initiatives and guide the organisations through legal complexities and different challenges. The connection to the business positions in-house lawyers as influential advocates for positive change, fostering a legal environment that is not only compliant but also aligned with the company’s overall success, its impact in the communities where the company operates and its business goals. The in-house lawyer should be, above all, the ultimate business partner and facilitator, doing everything within their knowledge to make things happen.
