What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

My legal team has worked diligently to implement a new contract negotiation framework and governance structure, resulting in enhanced efficiency in the negotiation process. We played a key role in negotiating contracts across Latin America, contributing to streamlined operations and improved outcomes. Additionally, we strategically managed civil, tax, and labour litigation cases, representing the Group’s interests and minimising liabilities. We developed litigation strategies to mitigate risks and achieved favourable outcomes in legal proceedings, which reduced ongoing litigation by over 50% in two years.

What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?

Being a successful in-house lawyer in the marketing and advertising industry requires a combination of legal expertise, industry knowledge, and specific qualities tailored to the demands of this dynamic field.

Some unique qualities that are essential for success include creativity and innovation. The marketing and advertising industry thrives on creativity and innovation. In-house lawyers need to be creative problem-solvers who can find legally compliant solutions that also meet the company’s marketing objectives.

Moreover, in-house lawyers must possess strong risk management skills to identify potential legal risks associated with marketing campaigns and advertisements. This includes assessing the legal implications of marketing strategies, evaluating potential liabilities, and developing risk mitigation strategies.

By combining these qualities with a strong foundation of legal knowledge and experience, in-house lawyers can successfully navigate the complex and dynamic landscape of the marketing and advertising industry.

How have you fostered a closer collaboration between the legal department and your business counterparts?

Fostering closer collaboration between the legal department and business counterparts is essential for achieving organisational goals effectively while mitigating legal risks. With this in mind, I have established open and transparent lines of communication between the legal department and business units by holding regular meetings to discuss ongoing projects, legal requirements, and potential challenges. Additionally, by gaining a deep understanding of the business objectives, strategies, and challenges faced by different departments within the organisation, the legal team is able to provide better targeted and effective legal support. This approach also encourages the business to involve the legal department early in the planning stages of projects and initiatives. As a result, the legal team can provide input, review contracts, and address legal considerations from the outset.

Do you have a cause, business-related or otherwise, that you are passionate about?

Motivated by a deep sense of justice and social responsibility, I have been actively involved in philanthropic endeavours, serving as a board member and contributing to the establishment of two NGOs. One of these organisations, based in São Luis do Maranhão, Brazil, is dedicated to empowering children from the Anil neighbourhood community, promoting their self-esteem and confidence. The other NGO, located in São Paulo, focuses on alleviating hunger among the underprivileged population of the city. My dedication and passion for my work are mirrored in my unconditional love for my daughters, Marcella and Pietra, as well as my cherished dogs.
