Anna-Marie Curry, company secretary and general counsel, leads the legal team at Bord Na Móna, an Irish publicly owned energy company with its origins in peat production which has grown...
Irish semi-state owned company Bord na Móna are traditionally known for their harvesting of peat, primarily in the Midlands of Ireland. However in recent years there has been a change of emphasis, and the company intend to downsize its peat harvesting business with a view to complete its transition to becoming a “sustainable biomass, wind and solar power” organisation, with a timeline of becoming almost completely reliant on renewable energy sources for production of electricity by 2030. With such an ambitious project, the compact legal team, led by head of legal Anna-Marie Curry, will be required to provide a legal and compliance foundation from which the company can achieve its targets. Undertaking projects of this scale will be made more challenging by uncontrollable external factors including environmental issues, commodities prices and increased competition in the fuels market. The legal team’s work will be as important as ever to the company’s future, as it rolls out and explores opportunities away from its traditional business operations.
