What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

Recently, our legal team at Novartis has been involved in several significant cases and transactions. We managed a complex employment litigation impacting the recent restructuring (ongoing). We have been actively involved in the design and implementation of an innovative approach to the reimbursement of our products through a portfolio deal negotiation with the Health Authority.

Our involvement in these matters has been crucial to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, and to protect the company’s reputation and financial interests, and maximise its assets.

What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?

I would say that to be a successful in-house lawyer in any industry, including mine, one has to have some important qualities such as strong legal knowledge, analytical skills, agility, ability to address and manage risks, good communication and interpersonal skills, adaptability, business acumen, and the ability to collaborate with colleagues and understand business objectives.

How have you fostered a closer collaboration between the legal department and your business counterparts?

To foster closer collaboration between the legal department and business counterparts, effective communication channels and regular meetings can be established. Encouraging legal team members to understand the business operations and challenges can also help build stronger relationships. Additionally, involving legal professionals in early-stage discussions on business initiatives can help facilitate proactive legal advice and problem-solving.
