What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

In the past year, our legal team has been actively involved in several high-profile cases and transactions that have significantly impacted on our business operations.

From negotiating important and complex services agreements, to relevant leases operations or challenging labor issues, we also successfully participated in the integration of a key local BPO provider into our operations, following the group merger and acquisition strategy.

Our team is also playing a crucial role in providing support to a strategic program designed to enhance and optimize customer service operations through advanced technology and innovative solutions, which requires deepen our knowledge and expertise in different fields, namely, artificial intelligence, technology law and data protection.

What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?

Being successful as an in-house lawyer in the BPO industry requires a deep knowledge of its unique challenges and regulatory environment but also (and sometimes most importantly) from the verticals where our clients operate (i.e, Finance and Banking; Healthcare; Technology; E-commerce; Telecommunications; Travel and Hospitality, etc.

Also, a strong commercial acumen is essential to align legal advice with business objectives and drive strategic decision-making, as well as excellent communication skills are vital for effectively liaising with diverse stakeholders, from C-level executives to operational teams.

On top of this, the ability to manage risk proactively and adapt to rapidly changing legal and regulatory landscapes is key.

How have you fostered a closer collaboration between the legal department and your business counterparts?

We have implemented several strategic initiatives, from regularly hold cross-functional meetings to ensure that legal considerations are integrated into the early stages of any project, to developing a series of training sessions and workshops for non-legal staff to enhance their understanding of key legal concepts and compliance requirements, and adopting a proactive approach to communication, where legal team members are embedded within various business units to provide real-time support and advice, using language that everyone understands. Catching up to Legal should be easy, faster and effective.

This not only helps in identifying and mitigating risks early but also builds a culture of trust and mutual respect between legal and business teams.

Do you have a cause, business-related or otherwise, that you are passionate about?

On a human centric point of view, I am an advocate for legal education and pro bono work, encouraging our team to contribute their skills and knowledge to support very specific cases that have been carefully selected. This not only aligns with our corporate values but also enhances our team’s engagement and sense of purpose.

On a corporate point of view, I strongly support the ongoing development of expertise in technology law and the challenges that arise in aligning company activities with technological advancements and legal compliance, therefore I encourage training of my team in legal awareness as well the use technology tools that can help us providing more sophisticated and effective legal work.
