Smurfit Kappa is one of Ireland’s largest companies, with a global revenue figure of €8.11bn and a listing on the London Stock Exchange, the group is also a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. Since 1999 the legal department of Smurfit Kappa has been led by general counsel Brian Marshall working out of Dublin. The importance of the legal function to the group is encapsulated through Marshall’s membership of Smurfit Kappa’s Group Executive Committee, meaning a legal voice is heard in the upper echelons of the organisation when deciding and implementing company strategy. In the recent past the legal staff at Smurfit Kappa have been instrumental in the development of the business, they have facilitated several important acquisitions allowing Smurfit Kappa to consolidate their position as one of the biggest players in the Irish market. Such a strategy has reaped benefits as Smurfit Kappa saw its first half of 2016 profits up 28% to €312m across the Group’s network of paper, recycling and forestry operations, helped in no small part to the legal and regulatory risk management by their legal team.
