Founded in 1915, Naspers is a global internet and entertainment group and one of the largest technology investors in the world. Based in South Africa and with a market capitalisation of over $100bn it is the largest company in Africa.
Currently based in the Netherlands, group general counsel David Tudor has advised the Naspers group of companies since 1996 and thus his understanding of its operations and ability to deliver tailored legal advice are closely aligned. He joined Naspers full time in 1999 as counsel before spending five years in private practice at international law firms WilmerHale and Bird & Bird between 2002 and 2007. He rejoined Naspers in 2008, being appointed as group senior counsel to lead the company legal teams for the group’s M&A activities in Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe and Russia. One acquisition during this period Tudor had a direct influence on was the 2008 purchase of Allegro Group, a Polish online auction website.
Tudor became Allegro’s general counsel in 2012 before being promoted to the position of general counsel: global transaction ecommerce at Naspers in 2013 and then assuming his current position in June 2015. Given the size and status of Naspers and Tudor’s prolific work especially in relation to corporate takeovers, he occupies a prominent position in Africa’s in-house legal community despite being located outside of the continent itself.
