Larry Butler
Head legal | Nedbank
Larry Butler has managed the legal team of the capital division of Nedbank, a relatively new entrant into the banking market in South Africa, for the last 21 years, overseeing and contributing to some of its most significant milestones over the decades that has seen it accumulate an astounding rate of growth. First joining Nedbank in August 1996, Butler has become a core part of the bank’s establishment and growth in the country, providing legal advice on key strategic matters.
He was recently involved in the $172m financial package from the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) to the company’s parent Nedbank, that includes a risk participating agreement that will help Nedbank to reduce its risk capital charge for guaranteed transactions, thereby freeing up scarce capital to underwrite more business. Butler started his career at law firm Bezuidenhout Van Zyl, where he practiced as a lawyer, specialising in commercial law for nine years.
