Operating in the country since 1904, British American Tobacco (BAT) South Africa employs over 1,800 staff and has achieved the exclusive Top Employers South Africa 2016 certification for the past seven years. Supporting and contributing to this internal strength, the legal team bring innumerable skills to the table. BAT is one of the leading and most international businesses in South Africa, and the largest manufacturer of cigarettes in the country with more than 20 brands in the market, including Dunhill, Kent and the market leader, Peter Stuyvesant.
With brand identity comes trademark infringement and counterfeiting, both of which keep the legal team active. Passionate about all aspects of business law and commerce, Joe Ralebepa, head of legal, has led the team since joining BAT in 2013 for the Southern Africa Area. Ralebepa has coached the team to provide solution-oriented legal service and counsel, bringing a level of practicality rather than theoretical advice.
Peers have acknowledged Ralebepa’s success and his quest for excellence, which is reflected in the competency of his team and their ability to add value to the business. As one of the senior members within the business, he enjoys creating opportunities for the legal team to thrive and deliver excellent performance and is passionate about people development. Ralebepa was previously employed by Coca-Cola as legal director and local ethics officer for the South African business unit.
