Citibank in Egypt has undergone major changes to its business strategy over the past few years. The parent company decided to take the major step of ending its retail banking services in favour of institutionalised corporate clients. Naturally, this has meant a great deal of work for the company’s legal team, led by highly rated corporate lawyers Hesham Fayez and Karim Emad Youssef. Fayez, explains that this process has been ‘a complex legal assignment on many levels, [that] has required prolonged working hours to efficiently advise on and handle the different difficult legal matters’ related to it. The legal team has also been involved in another complex issue, related to a debt settlement deal worth $55m.
In this case, Fayez says that ‘the efforts of the legal team have significantly led the complex negotiations with the defaulting customer, and have been the key driver’ for moving the process forward. The team has achieved this while maintaining a compact size that has meant workload management has often been an issue, with the political turmoil that has rocked Egypt over the past few years causing another challenge that further highlights their efficiency and professionalism.
The team continues to go the extra mile despite these difficulties, and allows its individuals time for personal development, which pays dividends as team members gain new qualifications and increase their skillset. The legal team at Citibank in Egypt maintains very close ties with the strategic management of the company, and it is ‘involved in all significant business matters and in charge of drafting all standard documentation’, making them a highly important function for the company as a whole.
