Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer’s South African subsidiary offers a leading portfolio of products and medicines across the region, as well as an innovative approach to therapeutics and research. Overseeing the broad array of legal and operational challenges related to these activities is a team led by Michael Maistry, legal manager for the Southern Africa region at Pfizer. The quality of Pfizer’s Southern Africa legal team is reflected in the high level of trust placed senior management places in it, treating the team as a ‘strategic partner in guiding [the company] through its complexities and ensuring that it excels in the right way’.
The legal function enjoys a very close relationship with both the CEO and senior management; the latter being the team’s ‘biggest clients’, according to Maistry. The prevalence of change in the sector is a constant challenge for the legal team, particularly given the highly regulated and extremely complex nature of the industry. As Maistry explains; ‘there are more and more markets favouring generic products over ethical [ones], and when superimposed on a market which does not allow direct to consumer marketing, it can make operations difficult. This, together with limited resources of certain markets, requires innovative solutions from legal in order to try alleviate the impact of these factors’.
Describing the team as ‘intimate and lean’, Maistry says the southern African legal function enjoys ‘tremendous support’ from African legal director Matthew Moodley, whose ‘championing of legal solutions in the region’ has been ‘a driving force’ behind the legal team’s success.
