As an emerging markets bank with the vast majority of its client base located in Asia and Africa, Standard Chartered has to contend with market dynamics and risks that are not typical of a UK-based lender. While Africa represents a huge market for the bank, the bulk of its central legal operations are run from the UK and led by group general counsel David Fein.
The team has made a big impact on the global banking sector by pursuing a tough stance on compliance and ethical conduct, a move that echoes new chief executive Bill Winters’ recent crackdown on “above the law” banker behaviour. The UK team supplements a number of legal teams based in Africa. Of these Africa-based counsel, Johannesburg-based Kerin Wood, head of legal and compliance for South Africa and the Southern Africa region, taking a large share of nominators’ credit.
The wider UK team features a number of highly praised lawyers, including head of sanctions compliance Steve Munro, global head of group regulatory affairs Jean Moorhouse and group legal counsel for dispute resolution Jennifer Choi. The actions of the legal team have helped Standard Chartered live up to its brand promise: “Here for good”.
