About

Millicom’s African presence has seen steady growth in its areas of operation. Driven by data, B2B and mobile financial services, the region delivered 10% of Millicom’s Group revenue in 2017. Millicom relies on Africa to increase mobile data connections and smartphone adoption to continue executing the strategy to monetise data and strengthen the mobile financial services. Chad, Ghana and Tanzania have been core centres of operation for Millicom. The legal team have been committed to helping the business invest in these countries through digital transformation and improved network coverage, while helping the company to actively sponsor critical social causes and financial inclusion. With the introduction of new regulations that allow customers to earn interest on account balances, the legal team has been able to work on driving acquisitions and usage. In 2014, they worked on launching Tigo Music, a unique streaming service which connects customers to a playlist of more than 30 million songs. Millicom is also known for its philanthropic partnerships, acting as a catalyst for growth, investing in local talent and connecting people to life-changing digital infrastructure. For example, in Chad the legal team has helped establish exclusive partnerships with the three main universities, nurturing future brand ambassadors and contributing to the educational development of the country. Other partnerships have included the non-government aid organisation Action Conntre La Faim, helping distribute financial support put forward by the World Food Programme in western Kanem. In Tanzania, the team also plays an active role in accelerating the digital lifestyle, acquiring Tanzanian telecommunications company Zantel in Zanzibar. The legal team notably contributed to Tigo’s world leading mobile brand Tigo Pesa, Africa’s first ever universal interoperability network which allows customers to send and receive money regardless of the mobile money operator.
