As the first mobile network operator in Egypt, founded in 1998, Orange provides voice and data exchange services, as well as 4G, 3G and broadband internet. The legal team lead all legal and regulatory affairs and is led by general counsel Rania Gharib, who has over 18 years in the field of telecommunication laws and regulation, competition laws, governmental relations, consumer protection and dispute resolution. Considered an asset to the legal team, nominators said, ‘she has helped to shape the legal and regulatory environment of the telecommunication industry in the Egyptian market’. In 2012, the legal team worked on acquiring 94% of Mobinil, buying most of the shares from its venture partner Orascom Telecom Media and Technology (OTMT), favourably executing its purchase of 93.9 million shares of the 100 million outstanding at a pre-agreed price, totalling a transaction value of US$90m. The legal team also subsequently worked on Mobinil officially rebranding to Orange in March 2016. Integral to its transformation in the sector, the legal department also assisted in the accomplishment of the fourth-generation 4G internet services license after signing a US$484m agreement with the national telecom reader. The department was involved in talks with the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), which resulted in the agreement to provide Orange with new terms to increase the internet speed of 4G to 2×10 MHz for mobile phones.
