RioZim
Incorporated in 1956, RioZim was set up initially to develop and mine the Empress Nickel deposit in the Midlands, and was the first mining operation to be set up outside of Europe by Rio Tinto. RioZim separated from Rio Tinto in 2004 and became a wholly owned Zimbabwean company that produces gold, coal, and refines nickel and copper. The company is also listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange. The legal department has proved crucial in its adherence to world class ethical standards in occupational health, safety and environmental management. Zanudeen Makorie leads the legal department in the capacity of general counsel and company secretary, bringing to the company his previous experience in private practice. RioZim operates in four areas; Rio Gold, Rio Base Metals, Rio Diamonds and Rio Energy, requiring the legal team to display knowledge in all while staying on top of the disparate legal challenges that they present. The legal department provide the legal foundation to deal with a large diversified regional company, allowing it to deliver sustainable shareholder wealth from natural resources and optimising the existing business.
