Sappi
Maarten van Hoven leads the legal function of Sappi, having joined the company in 2011, and takes on significant senior management responsibilities in addition to this – providing a tangible legal insight into strategic business decisions and highlighting the importance of a legal outlook into the company’s operation. Sappi, which is among the largest pulp and paper companies in the world and has operations around the globe, provides a fertile environment for the legal team to operate in, evidenced by a number of initiatives taken by the company in recent months. In October 2018, for example, it announced an R7.7bn project to upgrade infrastructure at its Durban paper mill, in a trend which is being repeated across its global infrastructure network; deals have also been announced in Austria and the US that will also see mills and production facilities there upgraded.
