Newly appointed legal head Monica Lupi joined Novartis in June 2018, bringing to the department her extensive experience handling complex legal and compliance issues within the healthcare and pharmaceutical sector. Prior to joining Novartis, Lupi was the head of legal department of AbbVie for Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. In this position, she led the legal and intellectual property commissions of CAEMe, a local pharmaceutical association to deliver advice on legal and compliance issues, transparency, clinical trials and other related matters. As an advocate of education, during her time at AbbVie Lupi also led the legal education programs for lawyers on issues like intellectual property, data exclusivity, patentability guidelines, compliance and bio therapeutics. Due to her willingness to learn and professionally develop in these areas, nominators have praised her for her acquired knowledge in the sector: ‘[Lupi] has to solve the various legal and regulatory challenges the industry entails. She has a full view of the industry and great expertise’. Prior to moving in-house, Lupi was a partner at SLA, a law firm with offices in Buenos Aires and California, as well as an associate of California-based Neff Law Group, where Lupi was legal manager for Latin America. Here she managed regional anti-piracy efforts for the Business Software Alliance (BSA) for large multinational technology companies such as Microsoft, Apple, Adobe and Autodesk.
