If you had to give advice to an aspiring in-house lawyer or general counsel, what would it be and why?

To an aspiring in-house lawyer or general counsel, I would give four distinct advices. First, to not limit yourself to being a legal advisor, as you also need to be a business advisor, sit at the decision-making table and speak the same language as the rest of the leadership team, as we are required to know our company’s business very well. Second, you need to become an individual that people enjoy working with. Attitude makes the difference, and so does being a team player. You can help understand and mitigate risks without being a showstopper. Third, recognise your team’s effort and let them shine. Your team’s success is your success. Be inclusive and respectful of everybody’s way of thinking, always, while also continuing to learn throughout your career. Lastly, celebrate your wins and learn from your mistakes.
