General counsel and company secretary, Australia and New Zealand | Bupa
Australia’s largest private health insurance group Bupa has been served for almost 15 years by its current general counsel and company secretary Emma Zipper, who has approximately two decades of experience dealing with a range of issues both in-house and in private practice. Responsible for the legal and company secretarial services for the Australian and New Zealand market for the global health insurer, Zipper’s expertise regularly comes to the fore when faced with challenges related to the complex and ever-changing industries of private health insurance, financial services, telecommunications and aged care. One of Zipper’s career highlights and a demonstrable showing of her ability as an expert deal maker came when she led the legal aspects of major transformational M&A activities for Bupa in the Asia Pacific region.
She also worked matters including the acquisition of the DCA Aged Care Group and MBF, the divestment of Bupa Australia’s financial services businesses and the merger of Bupa Australia’s three registered health funds into a single fund. In addition to her legal expertise, Zipper has developed and managed high calibre teams of lawyers and non-lawyers both in-house and in private practice, and her Bupa Australia group legal team drew attention from industry sources and was the winner of an award for its work serving the company. Proving her worth within the business, her role was expanded to include general counsel and company secretary of Bupa Care Services Australia in 2012. Prior to joining Bupa, Zipper was a senior associate at Mallesons Stephen Jaques (now King & Wood Mallesons), she holds a Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Arts from Monash University and is admitted to practice in both Australia and New Zealand.
