General counsel and head of group legal and governance | Macquarie
Michael Herring was appointed as general counsel of Macquarie Group in 2009. Herring heads up the legal and governance aspects of the global diversified financials group consisting of a group of legal and corporate governance offices. Within group legal, there are over 240 lawyers located in 12 countries, and in addition to this oversight, he is a member of Macquarie’s group risk and compliance committee and provides legal advice to Macquarie’s board, CEO and senior management.
Before becoming general counsel, Herring was an investment banker and headed up Macquarie Capital’s Financial Institutions Group, having first joined Macquarie in 2005. Prior to this Herring spent 17 years as a partner with Mallesons Stephen Jaques, specialising in mergers and acquisitions, including five years as managing partner. Herring is also the former chairman and current board member of the Skin & Cancer Foundation Australia, a not-for-profit institution specialising in diagnosis, clinical management, research and education of skin diseases.
