What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?
Identifying and managing the growing impact of regulation across our businesses – due to emerging new regulation and the expanding scope of the Woolworths Group ecosystem – has been a challenge. Effectively responding to this challenge, involves significant collaboration across the legal, government relations and business teams.
Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
I am less convinced about particular technological advancements impacting the role. Rather, I think further developing the legal, business, analytical and communication skills and enhancing the capability and “connectedness” of the in-house legal team, working with relevant tech tools and advancements, will have the greatest impact.
What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?
Working as an in-house lawyer in a grocery retail context requires responsiveness, collaboration and judgment. These are essential qualities to have in a fast-paced, dynamic environment that is characteristic of this industry.
