What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?
The number one challenge over the past year has definitely been supporting the business through a period of rapid growth and change as a result of several large acquisitions.
Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
I believe contract automation will become a higher impact area for in-house legal teams in the future, particularly where it allows sales and procurement teams to produce their own contracts while embedding and safeguarding the minimum contracting requirements of the business such as the mandatory legal, commercial, tax, risk and compliance positions.
What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?
Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions is a leading global supplier of equipment and tools, parts, service and technical solutions for the mining and infrastructure industries. To be successful as a regional in-house lawyer in this industry, one must: have a deep understanding of the products and services being supplied to customers in the region and the strategic priorities of the business (globally and locally), including how the products and services bring value to customers; have a connection to the managers of all business units that operate in the region; be open to continuous change, and contribute as an active, supportive and professional member of the legal team — locally and globally — and any other teams that you are part of.
