What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?

The main challenge over the past year has been navigating the constantly evolving regulatory landscape and how those changes could impact the company. At Flybuys, data security and member privacy remain a particular focus for the team, in addition to the various changes to employment laws.

As a small in-house legal team, we have had to identify various strategies for keeping on top of the changes and increased volume of work. A challenge has been succeeding in this arena while ensuring we remain trusted advisors to the business who can respond quickly and provide support as needed.

Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?

I believe full end-to-end automation of the contract lifecycle from the negotiation phase through to execution, filing, financial monitoring and renewal reminders will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future. If automation is implemented properly, it will enable in-house legal teams to focus on strategically important matters where they can really add value.

What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?

Someone who can listen, observe and anticipate the challenges facing the business and be proactive in partnering with key stakeholders to solve those challenges.
