What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?
It has been a challenge to build trust in our new operating model which includes hybrid working and a 50% new team. NSW government’s employee value proposition is powerful, so we have managed to recruit some amazing new talent in the past 12 months. The opportunities to build trust are so different with hybrid working. Hence, ensuring that matrix working is embedded, promoting knowledge transfer and providing a suitable coaching environment has been difficult.
Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
I believe AI will have a profound impact on legal teams. The power of ChatGPT in its pilot phase is phenomenal so I am eagerly looking forward to developing business cases for using AI in a way that ensures ethical decision making and amazing careers for our lawyers.
What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?
The successful in-house lawyer in this industry must have good judgment. It is important to have the ability discern the best course of action and make judgment calls when the situation calls for it.
