State-owned enterprise EnergyAustralia owns a multibillion dollar generation portfolio servicing more than 2.7 million customers nationwide. In September 2015 Chris Ryan saw his department expand to include the Regulatory Compliance team, increasing the total number of staff he oversees to 24 professionals and two support staff. A veteran lawyer in the global energy space, GC and company secretary Ryan established its compliance function from scratch and takes a central role in strategic business planning. ‘I have the privilege of leading a first-class team of lawyers, interacting with a world-class board of directors and am an integral part of the executive management team’, Ryan says. Previously working across Shell’s Europe, Asia and Australia operations, Ryan drew notice for leading the sale of its Australian downstream business in 2014, and for his role in the Floating LNG project. A proponent for alternative fee arrangements, Ryan says he would like to see firms proactively suggesting this during client engagement.
