David Cohen became group general counsel of CBA in June 2008 and assumed the role of leading group corporate affairs at the beginning of 2012. Cohen advises the CEO and the Board on legal matters, leads the Group’s legal team and is also responsible for the Group’s external and internal affairs, communications, sustainability and corporate governance. This comprehensive remit indicates Cohen’s extensive knowledge of the financial services industry and wide-ranging legal experience which will be called upon as the Group is involved in matters attracting a spate of publicity in the media. In addition to these duties, he has been non-executive director of ASB Bank Limited since February 2, 2015. Cohen is a member of the Law Council of Australia, the Australian Corporate Lawyers Association and the Banking and Financial Services Association. Before joining CBA, the largest bank in the southern hemisphere, Cohen acted as general counsel of AMP and was a partner with Allens Arthur Robinson for 12 years.
