Chief legal counsel | BHP Billiton
Geoff Healy
Chief legal counsel | BHP Billiton
Reporting directly to the CEO, Geoff Healy occupies the chief legal counsel position at the flagship Australian mining company, having joined BHP Billiton in June 2013. Prior to this, Healy had already acquired an intimate knowledge of the business as a partner at Herbert Smith Freehills, where he represented BHP in a Royal Commission investigating the alleged breach of Australian laws in its dealings with Iraq. The investigation concluding with BHP being fully cleared, indicating Healy’s excellent reputation management, in a market that is proving to be extremely volatile with numerous mergers and falling commodity prices. Away from the business, Healy’s seniority and experience is recognised via positions at other bodies; he has been an active member of the International Bar Association (International Litigation) and is currently the Australian Chair of that Committee. Healy has also been a member of the New South Wales Law Society professional conduct review tribunal and undertaken work for a range of charitable and not-for-profit organisations over many years.
