One of Australia’s most respected and high profile corporate counsel, Hatherly has been outspoken on issues such as diversity in the oil and gas industry. Heading a 20-strong team across legal, company secretarial, anti-bribery and insurance, she built the Japanese corporation’s Australian in-house function from scratch. The major driving force from her arrival five years ago, has been the $34bn Ichthys megaproject; ranked one of the world’s most significant oil and gas developments. Hatherly led its $20bn financing – the largest project-financing deal ever made. During the early stages of her role, Hatherly also successfully delivered the business case for growing the legal team from two to 12 lawyers. ‘Finding ways to continue to show where we are adding value is a constant challenge’, she adds, ‘but one that is very rewarding’.
