Matt Vaughan
General counsel and company secretary | Xero
‘Prioritising and operating in a fast-paced, hyper-growth environment, encompassing multiple jurisdictions, has been my biggest challenge’. A multiple-award-winning corporate counsel, Matt Vaughan has made great waves from an early stage of his career. ‘A dynamic leader’, Vaughan is an established thought leader on cloud technology’s developing legal framework, presenting regularly on the issue at national conferences. After past roles at PwC and Charter Hall, he became global accounting software specialist Xero’s first in-house lawyer in 2013. He has since built a cross-jurisdictional team and devised an enhanced compliance framework and global IP strategy to support the company’s complex business offering. In-keeping with Xero’s business proposition, Vaughan implemented new cloud collaboration technologies across the function to facilitate communication and ‘transparency’ among the team and wider business. He suggests law firms should harness similarly forward-thinking technology to serve clients more effectively, offering ‘more real-time, company or industry specific updates rather than broad brush updates’.
