Maya vanden Driesen is responsible for the legal arm of one of Australia’s largest listed companies, which has a diverse array of business operations including large supermarket chains Coles, Kmart and Target. Appointed as group general counsel in January 2015, vanden Driesen has experience in several areas of the business having previously held a number of senior roles in the company including legal counsel-litigation, senior legal counsel and general manager legal-litigation. She leads a national team of 42 in-house lawyers supporting one of Australia’s largest employers. Due to Wesfarmers’ lawyers being split between Perth and Melbourne, vanden Driesen has demonstrated tremendous flexibility to oversee both legal functions. Perth supports all business operations in areas including insurance, commercial disputes, regulatory matters and employment, while Melbourne provides day-to-day legal services to its retail businesses. In addition to her in-house role, vanden Driesen is a noted name in the wider Australian business community; she is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a member and former secretary of the Australian Corporate Lawyers Association (WA Chapter) and a member of the Law Society of Western Australia. Prior to joining Wesfarmers, vanden Driesen practiced law at Parker & Parker and Downings Legal.
