About

Appointed to his current position in September 2015, Nigel Lowry previously spent seven years heading the legal section of the Australian lending business in Macquarie’s corporate and asset finance group. Lowry is praised for his exceptional technical expertise, combined with strong commercial and strategic understanding. ‘Nigel Lowry is an extremely talented lawyer’, says one private practice source. ‘He was very well respected both within Macquarie and by external law firms for his keen commercial instincts and understanding of the bank’s strategic objectives, as well as his incisive technical capabilities’. Known for having led some of Macquarie’s most complex high value transactions, he is also praised for his ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders, and break things down to simple, relevant concepts. ‘From the perspective of an external adviser, Nigel is the sort of in-house client you want to have’, another private practice source says. ‘He works well as part of a team, manages the commercial interface and shoulders his fair share of the legal load’. Lowry himself also places considerable value on his relationships with outside counsel. ‘In addition to benefiting from their technical excellence, what we enjoy most about working with our preferred firms is their understanding of how our business operates and their anticipation of what we will need, when we will need it, and then making sure we get it’, he says. The one area for improvement he suggests is offering ‘alternative billing arrangements’.
