AGL Energy
AGL Energy is an integrated Australian energy company with operating business units involved in both the generation and retailing of electricity for residential and commercial use. The company operates power stations that use natural gas, wind, thermal and solar energy, and hydroelectricity. Established in 1837, the company now has more than 3.5 million customers and is Australia’s largest private owner, operator and developer of renewable energy. In supporting AGL’s diverse activities across the country, the legal department has shown strength in providing legal advice and representation on all corporate and commercial transactions related to the company’s portfolio of technology, services and products. This includes drafting commercial contracts for manufacture, purchase, tender, supply, sale and maintenance and advising on consumer, competition and other regulatory matters. The team is led by John Fitzgerald, who also oversees the company internal audit function and serves as director of all AGL subsidiary entities, as well as chair of the AGL Ethics Panel. Fitzgerald has served as general counsel since 2007 and has been practising in projects, mining and energy law for over 20 years.
