Fortescue Metals Group
A key component in Australia’s large scale materials and mining industry, Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) is a major player in the sector, pulling in $7.1bn USD in revenue for 2016, having shipped 169.4 million tonnes of ore globally. The legal team of FMG are experts in the field, and given that the company has an excellent record on staff retention many legal team members are employees of many years’ tenure. Legal department leader Peter Huston, director of corporate services and chief general counsel, has been with the company since 2005, prior to which he had already accumulated 20 years’ experience in corporate and legal roles including a twelve-year stint as a partner with Norton Rose. Similarly, legal manager for strategic contracts and development Rebecca Hayward has been at the company for six-and-a-half years, and Gemma Stabler and Lisa Willis have been with Fortescue for five and seven-and-a-half years respectively. This deep pool of experience that the FMG legal team is able to draw from has allowed them to achieve notable professional goals in recent years, including an extremely successful cost reduction drive in 2016 that has served as an excellent base for the company moving in to the 2017 financial year.
