L’Oréal’s sprawling global beauty empire maintains a significant presence in both Australia and New Zealand, with a portfolio of 29 and 19 brands under management in the two countries respectively. The L’Oréal Australia and New Zealand legal team was established in 2012 on the back of Anna Lozynski’s appointment as general counsel – a position she holds to this day – and she describes its mission as the following: ‘To be a trusted team of advisors to the business that acts with integrity and agility using a solutions-focused and collaborative mind-set in accordance with laws and L’Oréal norms’. By all accounts, the team has risen to this challenge excellently, and Lozynski sets out the progress the team has made in the recent past. ‘Over the last two years, the legal innovation journey at L’Oréal Australia and New Zealand has allowed a small team to be highly productive, engaging, efficient, responsive, and deliver legal services in a cutting edge manner that is both L’Oréal and industry leading, as well as being aligned with L’Oréal’s global and local innovation and digital objectives’, she explains. The team’s embracing of new technology, in the areas of ‘automation, digitisation and data analytics’, has allowed it to punch significantly above its weight consistently, as Lozynski details. ‘The beauty of our legal innovation tools’, she says, ‘is that they are available 24/7, are human error free, legally robust and compliant, and just as importantly, have created necessary space (and data) for us to focus on proactive legal management and allocate our efforts where they actually count – the high impact, high value legal work’. Along with Lozynski, who has been the driving force behind the constant push for technology-based innovation by the legal team, senior legal counsel Rebecca Taube was singled out for praise due to her diligence, creativity, hard work and effective support of a number of important projects for L’Oréal. With these extremely capable legal officers at the helm, the L’Oréal Australia and New Zealand legal team looks set to continue its growth in capabilities and the corresponding value additions to the company as a whole.
