A global market leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of fashion, luxury, sports and performance eyewear Luxottica employs a diverse legal team in the Australia and New Zealand region that is led by Australia and New Zealand general counsel and company secretary Tim Wong. Undergoing a recent restructuring that Wong states was with the intention of providing ‘more commercial and pragmatic legal advice to the business in a highly competitive and fast-paced retail environment whilst reducing costs each year’, a number of innovations were introduced. Division of work, including the ‘innovative fixed price outsourced solution for more routine commercial leasing work whilst ensuring we had efficient access to the best external advice for specialist and higher risk areas’. Displaying a clear business enabling ability, the team is central to the company’s consolidation of its operations in the region by being responsible for on-going assistance in applying for Australia and New Zealand anti-trust clearances for the merger of Essilor and Luxottica to ‘create a global integrated player in the eyewear industry’. Wong himself is founding committee member and chair for the Recruitment and Membership Sub-Committee of the New South Wales branch of the Asian Australian Lawyers Association (AALA), and an executive committee member of the AALA since 2016. Wong was also a mentor in the AALA Mentoring Program for two years and remains a keen proponent of diversity; Wong apart, the Luxottica legal team in Australia and New Zealand is entirely staffed by females.
