Generating the largest proportion of New Zealand’s electricity, Meridian Energy is one of the country’s leading electricity retailers and operates from its headquarters in Wellington. Heading Meridian Energy’s legal function is general counsel, company secretary and general manager of the office of the chief executive, Jason Stein. In providing and managing the company’s legal services, Stein is supported by a highly capable legal that includes associate general counsel Heidi Johanna Summa and senior legal counsel James Canny. The team recently secured a partnership for Meridian with South Korean carmaker Hyundai in a bid to convert half of their vehicle fleet to electric by June 2018. The team has assisted on a number of similar deals and partnerships to further develop Meridian’s role in the development of the electric car market such as a partnership with Kiwi Property to launch free electric car charging stations at Kiwi Property’s shopping malls and a partnership with Mevo, New Zealand’s first electric-hybrid car sharing service. Away from its work in the electric car market, Meridian’s legal team also assisted the company launch a $100m NZD fixed rate retail bond in March 2017.
