Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?

Our team recently leveraged the internal skills of our organisation to record an “Ask a Lawyer” internal legal training podcast. The podcast was targeted at our news and journalist workforce, answering key questions that can arise in their roles around defamation, contempt, copyright, and privacy laws. This was a novel way to deliver internal legal training in an engaging format. It was great to hear the polished final product, which revealed that our team could well have a future on the other side of the studio wall.

What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

Our team has advised on a broad range of significant legal matters for the business over the past year – from regulatory matters including breaches of the Commercial Radio Codes of Practice enforced by the ACMA to transactions involving the divestitures of a radio station business in Queensland and our company’s interest in a global CPaas business as well as significant commercial contract negotiations including for key talent and commercial partners. The integration of our regional radio business, which was acquired in early 2022, has also been an important endeavour for the business that the legal team has assisted with. As a national content creation and delivery business, the ever-evolving digital landscape has naturally had a significant influence on the legal issues we advise on.

What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?

I believe a diversity of voices and representation is a really important pursuit, not just when it comes to the workforce but also in the content we create and disseminate. You cannot be what you cannot see (or in the case of our audio business, you cannot be what you cannot hear). It has been very rewarding to have the opportunity to work on some projects that are enhancing opportunities to engage with ARN’s diverse audience and provide a platform for future talent.
