First, can you please give us an idea of the sort of work your team has done recently? 

Recently, we completed a Series C financing round, raising US$57mn. Our group structure is evolving, with one contribution, two spin-offs, and further restructuring planned. We are excited to launch in four new European markets by the end of March 2024, although details are still confidential. Additionally, we introduced the insurance product “Refurbed Plus.” Our team is also engaged in various regulatory compliance projects, including the Whistleblowing Directive, Digital Service Act, DAC7 Directive, EPR Compliance, and initiating ESG Compliance efforts. These initiatives are pivotal in supporting our growth and ensuring robust compliance across operations. 

How does your legal strategy change during periods of instability or uncertainty?   

The mission of a refurbed legal team is to provide actionable legal intelligence and risk assessment to all departments to steer refurbed business operations and strategy.  

By doing so, we aim to achieve quarterly OKRs (objectives and key results) which allow us to align our strategy and key projects with the company’s need and overall strategy on a regular basis.  

Moreover, all team members follow a very agile approach, meaning that we are always able to shift workload spontaneously in case an unexpected legal emergency requires the full attention of one of our lawyers. 

Do you make use of any ‘legal tech’ products, and if so, for which areas of your job do you find it most useful? 

Our team leverages advanced legal tech solutions to streamline operations and enhance efficiency. We utilise online notarisations and qualified e-signatures to facilitate secure and efficient document processing. Our contract lifecycle management and contract automation tools ensure seamless handling of agreements from creation to execution. For financial operations, we employ automated debt collection, including automated European Payment Orders, to expedite and simplify the collection process. Additionally, our automated trademark enforcement system effectively manages and protects our intellectual property rights. These technologies significantly improve our workflow, ensuring precision and compliance in all legal processes.
