Regional counsel europe | GATX Rail Europe
First, can you please give us an idea of the sort of work your team has done recently?
As a leading railcar lessor, GATX Rail Europe has a fleet of more than 29,000 railcars and nearly 200 different wagon types. Therefore, my team and I worked on a wide range of legal matters in various European jurisdictions, such as: compliance, in particular, related to anti-corruption, fair competition, sanctions and whistleblowing; corporate finance, in particular credit facility agreements; corporate law, in particular, M&A and corporate reorganisation; legal support of the purchasing departments, in particular on long-term supply agreements, service framework agreements and general purchasing terms; legal topics related to telematics and sensors on our railcars and related EU legislation, such as the EU Data Act; litigations, in particular, damage claims against third parties that damaged our railcars and warranty claims against suppliers
How does your legal strategy change during periods of instability or uncertainty?
During periods of instability or uncertainty, I focus even more on practical and timely risk assessment. This helps us to identify emerging risk trends and opportunities, increase stakeholder trust, support business growth, and improve corporate decision-making.
Do you make use of any ‘legal tech’ products, and if so, for which areas of your job do you find it most useful?
We use standard software solutions and IT tools, for example, for sanctions screening and billing, but we do not use specific ‘legal tech’ products.
