What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?
In a fast moving and continuously changing regulatory environment, it has been challenging to keep prioritising my impact, including making conscious decisions every day on where the available time and resources will make the greatest impact. This challenges me continue cooperating and aligning with my team and company, while remaining customer focused.
Do you have an example of a time when you have come up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works that did not result in a large expense?
While it may not be innovative, organising governance processes and encouraging automation and standardisation is incredibly important. This helps my team focus on proactively enabling the business and our customers to grow.
What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?
I believe good listening and observation skills, alongside an interest and understanding of the business in which you operate are important qualities to possess. It is also important to be curious, ask in-depth questions and build rapport in order to make smart and well-informed decisions. In-house lawyers must also be able to translate applicable rules and regulations into actionable advice, using the law to achieve company goals.
