What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?

Balancing the complexity of matters with the work-life balance of the various legal teams while ensuring that different business units get the legal support they require. Everyone thinks, maybe correctly, that they are the priority.

Do you have an example of a time when you have come up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works that did not result in a large expense?

This is nothing revolutionary, but asking individual lawyers to work on matters outside of their traditional area of competence and geography can free up resources for transversal projects. This has two benefits: it saves external legal fees and it allows the in-house lawyers involved to broaden their horizon and learn something new.

What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?

Be smart, be pragmatic, invest in understanding the fundamentals of the business, ask ‘why’ and take a helicopter view if and when needed.
