Can you tell us a little about your most significant accomplishments and projects, as a team or by yourself in your role, recently?
As part of the regional team alongside Perú, one of our major projects is to seize the compliance culture in the organisation. We use legal tools specially made to enhance our trainings for both countries; Bolivia and Perú.
I consider one of the most important accomplishments as a lawyer in a broad context as being able to lead and anticipate decisions. During the pandemic and other social situations in Bolivia, the general counsel role in an organisation gained more relevance, pushing the legal team to find practical, legal and compliant solutions to continue operations. As part of the crisis committee addressing the pandemic, it is the responsibility of the general counsel to be involved in a commercial strategy and stay close to the commercial team, knowing the main requirements and necessities.
To lead both roles; corporate affairs and legal, my vision requires more involvement in business and being aware of the importance of reputation.
What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about and why?
I can visualise three important pillars for quality service with one of them being an internal client service that models a team of trusted, valued and innovative business partners. As general counsel, our mission involves being “the best in practice” offering a quality service for all internal clients (supply chain, finance, production and others). Secondly, anticipating emerging risks, through engaging externally as an ambassador of the business. It is crucial to be aware that in the general counsel role, the company reputation is on our “shoulders”, so we must be an external ambassador and be prepared to act as a trusted and credible spokesperson for the company.
Thirdly, driving sustainable value creation by understanding and contributing, usually through informed decision-making. The Bolivian society is walking the path of a sustainable and environmentally friendly business area, and as lawyers we need to know and participate in this conversation.
How is your legal team planning to contribute to the growth and expansion of your organisation, over the next few months?
As part of the management committee, we have set objectives we measure monthly, which contribute to the business reaching its main objective. As general counsel seated at this table, it entails a responsibility to deliver the best and most efficient legal service. It also involves being efficient in a bureaucratic environment with an ability to anticipate future complications. One of the non-negotiables is the compliance culture, and as general counsel I am the principal ambassador of this.
Finally, the use of legal tech tools is a new requirement, it is a “must” to apply tools for an efficient way of working in the legal world.
