Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved the way your compliance team works and didn’t come at a huge cost?
When I arrived at the company, the legal area was fragmented, there was no cohesion or teamwork, the activities and work carried out did not have a common purpose or objectives, and they were carried out independently without coordination. One of the objectives outlined was to build a team that works jointly and coordinated under a single direction, this could be achieved with constant work meetings either in person or by videoconferences, indicating common goals and encouraging the team in the process. Frequent exchange of information and ideas, the members of the team began to interrelate much better, to get to know each other and exchange ideas to improve the quality of the service provided by the team.
What are some of the key developments (legal, geopolitical, or otherwise) that have affected your business over the past year?
The regulation in the insurance market in Bolivia has been very strict and closed, leaving aside the technological innovations that could be taken advantage of by the Insurance Companies, especially the commercial area. Happily, last year the regulatory entity, APS, began to change its regulatory policy by opening the regulations that regulate the market and facilitating the use of technological and electronic means mainly by insurance companies, to market their products, that is to say that they already know there is an electronic commerce of insurance policies. I understand that this is only the beginning of an opening in sector regulation, since current technology opens a wide panorama for the insurance sector to be dynamic, agile and efficient, not only in the marketing of policies, but also in the service itself. of a claim from the opening of a claim to its payment with the corresponding compensation for the claim.
How do you think the role of the in-house lawyers will evolve in the coming years?
I maintain the idea that technology and its various ways of using it will be a very important ally in the future for any general counsel, from facilitating the exchange of opinions with your team, through a quick videoconference, to the development of templates or models. of contracts, and even of base formats of demand briefs (in processes of execution not of knowledge) that can be applied in any sector or item of the current market.
Do you use any technology products, and if so, for which areas of your work do you find them most useful?
Currently in the company, we have started a project around the creation of a module in bonds, this will serve to prepare standard contract templates, of counter-guarantees granted by the guarantor (insured) for the issuance of bond policies. This implies that in the process of issuing the policies, the commercial area can, at the same time, issue the policy and the counter-guarantee contract to deliver both to the client (insured), saving time and resources.
